“Gender needs to be taught in schools”- Leelah
“My death needs to mean something”- Leelah Alcorn
On Sunday, December 27, 2014, Leelah Alcorn a 17 year old transgender girl wrote a suicide note, posted it on Tumblr and then walked out to a highway and out in front of a semi-truck, tragically ending her life. In her last post, Leelah explained how her parents had forced her to attend conversion therapy, pulled her out of school and isolated her in an attempt to change her gender identity.
Join us at Portland Waterfront Park for a community showing of solidarity and support, as we hold vigil in memory of our fellow sister Leelah, as we mourn and learn about this tragedy, what it means to us, why, and what’s next. If you are unable to attend in person, please feel free to be with us collectively and in spirit, and attend this event as a show of support in solidarity.
More details to follow later this afternoon. Specific location TBA. Expected temperature is expected to be about 40 degrees, with only 20% chance of rain. Please stay up to date on the latest and greatest details here:
